CT POST: ‘ROOM’ PLAYS TO STRONG RESPONSE IN NEW YORK READINGS – A “GRIPPING AND MOVING POWERFUL FAMILY DRAMA”

(Joe Meyers, entertainment journalist for the Connecticut Post and author of the blog Joe’s View, was our guest at last Friday’s invited workshop readings of ‘ROOM AT THE END OF THE HALL.’ Joe wrote a great piece on our Indiegogo fundraising campaign in December 2012 and he’s been a terrific friend to the project, having been instrumental in helping us spread the word and chronicling the play’s journey from page to New York stage. Below is an excerpt from Joe’s latest article on ‘ROOM,’ an insider perspective on our February 22nd workshop readings of Rocco’s latest draft of the play. CONNECTICUT POST: ‘ROOM’ PLAYS TO STRONG RESPONSE IN NEW YORK READINGS
by Joe Meyers; Published Thursday February 28, 2013

Last week, in a studio space high above 43rd Street in Manhattan, the dream of two Greenwich friends moved a big step closer to realization.

Writer Rocco Natale and producer/actor Sean Hudock put on two workshop performances of Natale’s play “Room at the End of the Hall” for invited audiences of industry professionals and friends and family.

Because I had written a piece in 2012 on the years of work they’ve put into the play and their innovative fundraising, Rocco and Sean invited me to the reading and I am happy to report that it went over like gangbusters.

The duo met their timetable for the workshop — with a month to spare — so it seems likely they will achieve their ultimate goal of a full production in New York City within the next few theater seasons.

Hudock and Natale and their director, Ross Evans, were able to get rising Broadway star Claybourne Elder to read one of the two roles in the powerful family drama.

Elder played Clyde Barrow‘s brother, Buck, in last season’s Broadway musical “Bonnie & Clyde” opposite Jeremy Jordan (of “Smash” and “Newsies’) and Laura Osnes (of the previewing “Cinderella” now on Broadway).

“Room at the End of the Hall” was gripping and moving even without any sets or costumes or stage lighting.

Natale follows the reunion/road trip of brothers Malky (Elder) and Doug (Hudock) who return to their closed-up family home in search of a diary they hope will contain answers to a terrible tragedy in their past.

In the course of trying to get into the house — the keys don’t work properly — we get a strong sense of the brothers’ past relationship, which has consisted of Doug coping with Malky’s mental illness and getting him out of one jam after another.

We see that the responsible family man Doug fears he might be only one false step away from the chaos in which his brother lives.

It was amazing to watch the two actors go so deep into their characters from behind the music stands holding scripts.

Although the presentation was technically a “reading,” Elder and Hudock both appeared to have most of their lines down, so the audience was able to go as far into the story as the actors did.

Like many of their New York City theater peers, Natale and Hudock got tired of waiting for someone else to produce “Room at the End of the Hall.”

Last year, they turned to the crowd-sourcing fundraising website Indiegogo and managed to come up with the funds for the private workshop production. Hudock and Natale’s project was just one of several notable theater projects in 2012 that were able to fund raise on the Internet — the downtown troupe The Amoralists did it for their acclaimed production of Derek Ahonen‘s “The Bad and the Better” and the company of the off-Broadway musical “Now.Here.This.” financed their cast recording through crowd sourcing.

“The way our generation is producing theater is in stark contrast to previous generations. It’s more of a grassroots thing,” Hudock said of not waiting for big commercial producers to option a play and then to begin raising money for it.

“Nothing against (old work), but our generation is tired of seeing the same plays or the same musicals produced over and over again,” Natale said.

Hudock and Natale have been friends since their Greenwich High School days and have been working together for several years to produce “Room” in New York.

Their next stop is somewhere off-Broadway and I have a hunch “Room” in a fully staged form will meet with good reviews and strong audience response. The fact that the play is a two-character, one-set piece should also result in a long after-life in regional and college theaters.

AN EXCLUSIVE LOOK INSIDE THE ‘ROOM’ WORKSHOP PROCESS; WORKSHOP AUDIENCES RAVE: NATALE’S ‘ROOM AT THE END OF THE HALL’ IS “BRILLIANT” “POWERFUL” “HAUNTING”

Last week the ‘ROOM’ Creative Team was thrilled to have the opportunity to put Rocco Natale’s latest draft of ROOM AT THE END OF THE HALL through an intensive 29-hour workshop process that culminated in two invited readings of the latest draft of the work on Friday February 22 at the Creative Center at Manhattan Theatre Club.

Led by award-winning director Ross Evans (Broadway’s VENUS IN FUR; 2011 Mary Mill Directing Fellowship from Manhattan Theatre Club), the workshop process offered Playwright Natale the unique opportunity to collaboratively explore his acclaimed script in a rehearsal room with two actors (Claybourne Elder (Broadway’s BONNIE & CLYDE) and Sean Hudock (PRIVATE ROMEO)), Director Ross Evans and Production Stage Manager Kathy Snyder. ‘ROOM’ Marketing/Creative Consultant Chris Vongsawat joined us in the rehearsal room for one day to capture a brief glance into the ‘ROOM’ workshop process (check out the video above!).

Our team had an invigorating and inspiring week exploring the haunting world and complex relationships that Rocco’s given us in ROOM AT THE END OF THE HALL – returning, once again, to The Alchemical Theatre Laboratory (where we kicked off the production process last November) for the workshop rehearsal process. It was a productive week filled with questions, pages of rewrites and little rest, and come last Friday morning Rocco emerged with another exciting new draft of ‘ROOM’ that we were anxious to test out on audiences, many of whom had never been exposed to ROOM AT THE END OF THE HALL.

We were overwhelmed at the positive response that Rocco’s new draft received. Audiences, comprised of  members of the entertainment industry, production donors, friends, colleagues and family, packed both presentations and if it wasn’t enough to have the opportunity to share this new work with so many special guests for the very first time, to hear feedback that included “wonderful” “powerful” “haunting” “brilliant” and “beautiful” emerge from their mouths (and twitter feeds) after joining Malky and Doug on the lake shore of a house on Cape Cod, was nothing short of fulfilling. At the end the exhausting week our entire team was instantly re-energized to tackle the journey that still lies ahead for this new play.

There’s still plenty of work to be done and and many exciting announcements to be made in the coming weeks, but for now we’d love nothing more than to, once again, extend our sincerest thanks to the many who joined us on Friday and to the many who’ve helped us bring this new work to life, including our extraordinary family of ‘ROOM’ donors

Stay tuned and, as always, we’ll see you soon!

VIDEOS: KICKING OFF 2013 WITH A BANG, ‘ROOM’ HITS THE AIR WAVES, MAKES HEADLINES & OUR INDIEGOGO CAMPAIGN BREAKS $8,000!

Click Here To Help Us Bring This New Play to Life Off-Broadway!The amount of support from fellow artists, colleagues, friends and family in the few months since we first announced our big push to bring ROOM AT THE END OF THE HALL from page to a New York stage has been nothing short of overwhelming – in response, all of us here on the ‘ROOM’ Creative Team have been overflowing with joy and the deepest gratitude. In the short span of just three short months, this project – five years in the making – has made extraordinary progress forward and today this new play is closer than ever to making its world premiere on a New York stage very soon. As a thanks to the many friends who’ve supported, and continue to support, us along the way, our team put together this little Happy New Year video:

As our incredibly generous family of ‘ROOM’ supporters continues to grow each day, we’ve also been humbled by the outreach from our friends in the press who’ve lent a hand in helping us spread the word about our Indiegogo fundraising campaign. In December 2012, journalist Joe Meyers of the Connecticut Post got wind of the unique way that we’ve chosen to fund the world premiere of ROOM AT THE END OF THE HALL and after a wonderful phone chat with Joe just before the holidays, newspapers throughout Connecticut ran this great feature on our project. Following that, Connecticut talk radio host Jim Campbell (Host of ‘Business Talk with Jim Campbell,’ also know as Jim ‘Fischer’ to WGCH listeners) read Joe’s article and was intrigued by our grassroots ‘crowd-sourcing’ campaign – not the usual way that plays are typically brought to life on stage. Jim was kind enough to invite ‘ROOM’ Playwright Rocco Natale and ‘ROOM’ Creative Producer Sean Hudock to sit down with him at WGCH Radio to discuss the project. You can have a listen to the full interview, which aired on January 2 & 3 of this year, via the YouTube link below:

With 2013 off to an incredible, running start, our team is in the final stages of prep for our February NYC Workshop reading of Rocco’s latest draft of the play – details, including director and cast will be announced very soon. Until then, we’re a little more than 30 days away from our fundraising deadline and we’re almost 1/5 of the way to reaching our goal. Our seasoned ensemble needs all the help we can get to make this project a reality. Check out our Indiegogo fundraising campaign here to watch clips from the play, learn more about the project and the team behind the work, and join our amazing family of ‘ROOM’ supporters by becoming a $25 sponsor of the 2013 ‘ROOM’ workshop today! We’ve got some stellar perks waiting for you, plus you’ll be among the privileged few to hear about the slew of exciting announcements we’ll be making about the project in the coming weeks! As always, thank you for helping us bring this exciting new play to life.

Check out more photos from our Kick-Off Event on Facebook!

What a night! On the evening of Tuesday November 20, 2012 our creative team threw a grand celebration to benefit the upcoming world premiere of Rocco Natale’s new play ROOM AT THE END OF THE HALL. Joined by generous New York-based event sponsors Brooklyn Brewery, McClure’s Pickles and Food Passion Caterers, guests (including donors and friends to the production, as well as some of New York’s finest independent theatre artists) packed the beautiful Alchemical Theatre Laboratory in Manahattan as we transported them to the beach shore of a lake house on Cape Cod – the play’s setting – and treated them to this sneak peek of the new play set to premiere in New York late next year:

The kick-off celebration, which also served as fundraiser for the world premiere production, culminated in a special announcement made by Creative Producer Sean Hudock: “You’ve all been instrumental in bringing this exciting new work, five years in the making, to life, said Hudock addressing guests at the event. “We’re so pleased to announce that thanks to your support our team is moving forward with a New York City workshop of the play to be held in early 2013, with a cast and director to be announced in the coming weeks.”

Our journey to bring this play from page to stage is far from over! Click here to help us bring this new play to life on Indiegogo!

HOW YOU CAN HELP THOSE IN NEED IN THE WAKE OF HURRICANE SANDY…

It’s been a challenging and very somber past few days up here in New York City – and all along the eastern seaboard – to say the very least. Our hearts and thoughts go out to those who have been affected by Hurricane Sandy – and our gratitude to the first responders, volunteers, politicians and the scores of folks who have been instrumental in the relief effort.

As we recover and continue to offer our own resources and available hands to friends and neighbors impacted by the storm, we want to encourage those who are able-bodied to:

- Visit the American Red Cross website to donate and learn how you can help those in need during this difficult time;

- For those in the New York/ New Jersey area, visit WNYC for a comprehensive list of ways that those who are mobile and nearby can lend a physical helping hand;

- TIME OUT NEW YORK has also compiled (and continues to update) a growing list of NYC  Volunteer/ Donation outlets;

- For those in the disaster areas looking for gas, here is a very helpful map of  open gas and charging stations

From all of us here at ROOM AT THE END OF THE HALL we  send our very best and hope that you and your loved ones are safe and sound.

Love and Recovery,
Sean, Rocco, Kaitlin, Chris and The ROOM AT THE END OF THE HALL Creative Team

FINDING ‘ROOM’ ON THE BEACH: BRINGING OUR PLAY TO LIFE FROM PAGE (TO FILM) TO STAGE FOR OUR FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN

Go behind-the-scenes on this weekend’s ‘ROOM’ promo shoot on Facebook!

This weekend, our dream team of ROOM AT THE END OF THE HALL cast and creatives trekked from locations all over the tri-state area to one central beach shore.  It was the first time the whole team had been together, and the first time that many of us had seen each other in weeks.

While the goal of bringing the ensemble together was to capture materials for promo and for our fundraising campaign (made possible thanks to our crew and Director of Photography and ‘ROOM’ Creative Consultant Chris Vongsawat), our team was ultimately afforded, and took great advantage of, another chance to understand the play a little better, to go a bit deeper, and to gain a greater understanding of how important the play’s setting is. When you think about how many months we have until ROOM AT THE END OF THE HALL goes on stage before an audience for the first time, the prospect of an extended period of time to explore the play is an exciting one!

So despite the cold air, wet sand, and long night of work to capture bits of the play on camera for promo, the creative juices were flowing (thanks in great part to our trusty supply of McClure’s Pickles) and the play began to come alive on its native, sandy landscape…

Now, after an inspiring evening at the beach, our team faces another great challenge: how to put the pieces of a play intended for the stage, which we’ve filtered through the tiny lens of a camera, together, and in such a way that we’re faithful to the stage medium and communicate the story of the play… keep your eyes peeled in early November to see what our team comes up with! In the meantime, catch a sneak peek of what’s to come at Facebook.com/RoomThePlay.

Last, but certainly not least, a huge thanks to: The Hudock Family, Kate Ivins, Donia Khalifa, Jackson Moran, Rocco Natale, Kaitlin Paul and Chris Vongsawat. And, as always, thank YOU for joining us in this journey to bring ROOM AT THE END OF THE HALL to life on stage.

We’ll see you soon,
The ROOM AT THE END OF THE HALL Creative Team
